Forrest General Hospital and the Spirit of Women present Day of Dance to promote cardiovascular awareness

Put on those dancing shoes, and start feeling the beat as Forrest General joins more than 20 hospitals and health networks across the country in the national Day of Dance for Heart Health, sponsored by the Spirit of Women Health Network. The free event is designed to increase awareness of the benefits of dance and exercise in the prevention of heart disease.

The Day of Dance will be held at the Hattiesburg Lake Terrace Convention Center located at 1 Convention Place from 9:30 a.m. until 3 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 26, 2005.

“Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in women in the United
States,” said Thomas Messer, cardiologist with Southern Heart Center. “This is a startling statistic, but most people are unaware of it. Also, women tend to be misdiagnosed more than men because their symptoms may present differently. The Day of Dance will educate women about symptoms as well as the benefits of
exercise for cardiovascular health.”

Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. Mistress of Ceremony, Miranda Beard, WDAM’s Morning and Midday news anchor and assistant director, will kick-off the events at 10 a.m. Attendees will be encouraged to get in the groove and move during the interactive dance demonstrations provided by area professionals. Different styles of dance will be taught and demonstrated including ballroom classics such as the waltz, swing and salsa, country line dancing, hip hop, aerobic dance and Middle Eastern Dance.

Local dance studios, cheerleading organizations, and high school dance teams will provide entertainment throughout the day. Health screenings, educational presentations by prominent physicians, vendor displays, and door prizes will be just some of the fun and educational activities during the Day of Dance.

CPR classes will be available to the public throughout the day. The classes are free; however, registration is required.

“Dance is an excellent form of cardiovascular exercise, yet it’s an exercise that is fun to do,” said Messer. “Exercise is vital in maintaining cardiovascular health, but many people feel they don’t have time to exercise. Day of Dance will show women that you can have fun and exercise at the same time.”

The Spirit of Women Health Network has partnered with Merck/Schering-Plough Pharmaceuticals, Kimberly-Clark, Danskin, Good Housekeeping, 2sourcesofcholesterol.com and The Heart Truth campaign for the event. The Heart Truth is a national awareness campaign on women and heart disease sponsored by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), part of the National Institutes of Health, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). The Heart Truth introduced the Red Dress as the national symbol for women and heart disease awareness in 2003. Danskin, the world’s leading manufacturer of activewear, dancewear and legwear for girls and women, will design a red dress dance outfit for women and girls in association with the Day of Dance.

A sweepstakes will be conducted with the winner receiving a visit from a Rockette, who will serve as a one-day personal dance trainer for the winner and 20 friends.

Hallmark Business Expressions has designed Day of Dance for Heart Health cards that will be distributed by physicians to female patients at risk for heart disease. Cards will include information on signs and symptoms of heart disease and are designed to be sent to friends, family and loved ones to educate individuals about heart disease.

“The Day of Dance is designed to educate women and their families on making heart healthy exercise choices through dance, while having fun,” said Tamara Carr, Community Health coordinator and Spirit of Women co-chair.

A representative from the Spirit of Women national office, Lynne J. Stocks, Medimetrix Spirit of Women operations coordinator, will join Forrest General in celebrating the Day of Dance.

“We are excited to have Lynne Stocks attending the event,” said Carr. “Her national perspective will be an asset to all those attending.”

Forrest General is the official Spirit of Women hospital for south Mississippi. Spirit of Women is a national program with a mission to motivate women to make positive changes in their lives. Spirit of Women’s educational goal is to reach clinicians and consumers through relevant programs in a trusted hospital environment.
